Apple's share of the tablet market has halved
5 December 2018
In the second quarter of this year, the share of Apple in the global tablet market in quantitative terms fell by almost half - to 28.3% compared with 47.2% for the same period of 2012.
The company's share decreased not only due to the rapid growth of other players, but also due to the fact that shipments of their own tablets, iPad, fell by 14% compared to the same period last year (to 14.6 million units), calculated in Strategy Analytics .
The collapse of iPad shipments in the second quarter of this year, analysts explain the lack of fresh models - during this period the company did not present any new products, whereas last year just before the beginning of the second quarter, in March, the iPad was presented with a Retina display. On the other hand, a year ago, there was no iPad mini among Apple products.
Note that Apple’s share has been falling for a long time. According to IDC, in the first quarter of this year it decreased to 39.6% compared with 58.1% in the first quarter of last year.
The share of the Android platform in the second quarter increased to 67% compared to 51.4% a year earlier, while the share of Windows increased from 0.5% to 4.5%. According to Strategy Analytics, in the period from April to June of this year, the number of global shipments of tablets based on Windows 8 amounted to 2.3 million gadgets (compared to 200 thousand devices in the same period last year).
The growth of the results of Windows tablets analysts explain mainly the fact that Microsoft and its partners have reduced the price of devices. At the same time, the lack of a sufficient number of applications (first of all, it concerns gadgets on Windows RT) continues to be the key cause of low demand for devices.
Experts also pointed out that the growth of the global tablet market is slowing. Over the past quarter, the market grew by 43% compared year-on-year, whereas a year earlier in a similar comparison the increase was 116%. Despite this, analysts NPD DisplaySearch believe that the further development of the tablet market will maintain a positive trend.
This year, according to Gartner, the supply of tablets to the world market will reach 201.8 million units.
